Period Dramas: Made in Dagenham

Based on real events in England during 1968, Made in Dagenham is a 2010 film, successful enough to follow with a musical based on it in 2014.

bbc.co.uk

What It's About:

It's 1968, and out of over 55,000 workers at the Ford plant in Dagenham, England, only 187 are women. These women, responsible for piecing together and sewing the leather seats, trim, and more, were re-classified as "unskilled" labourers, causing their pay to be less than those of any of the men in the factory. Prompting a fight for equality through a walk-out, the fallout from their actions impacts not only the entire Ford plant, but all of the women who came after.

Why You'll Love It:

  • If you love the 60's fashion, culture, and history, this one feels like a an authentic portrayal of real issues during this time
  • True female empowerment. The subject matter and the way it was done make your heart swell with pride as a woman, and infuriate you at the injustice at the same time.
  • Sally Hawkins. If you adore this women even half as much as I do, you will not be disappointed in her performance. She shines here just as she always does
  • If you are just getting into women's equality issues, it's a great movie for dipping your toe in. It's inoffensive and relatively simple. Not overly political or difficult to grasp, it makes its point clearly without feeling preachy

Why You Might Want To Skip It:
(Mild spoilers to follow. If you are already convinced to watch it, you're likely good to stop here).
  • If you want the real, gritty version of this story, this isn't it. It's the way to make this inspirational and appeal to the masses.
  • This movie only really touches the surface. It goes into the information for the initial fight, but since the Equal Pay Act didn't come into effect until two years later, we are left wondering what happened in that in-between time
  • If you don't care about women's rights or 60's culture, this won't really appeal to you, nor will it likely convert you into caring. It doesn't go quite far enough to convince you to care if you don't.
