TMST - Review Books for Publishers or Yourself?

I want to thank Rainy Day Ramblings once again for hosting this fun discussion. This week's Tell Me Something Tuesday topic is "Are most of your review books for publishers or are you reviewing books of your choice?".

Well, since this is just my second year of blogging, I haven't actually even been offered the chance to review for publishers, but that's okay - I'm not sure that I would want to anyway. The sort of nice thing is that I don't have any deadlines or obligations other than the ones I place on myself. If I don't feel like posting this week, or want to take a month off, there is nothing saying that I can't. If I was accepting ARCs, I would either have obligations and/or deadlines, and would feel guilty and stressed about it.

Yes, the unfortunate part is that I might not always be able to post the most current or hot-topic books, but I definitely prefer it this way. And also, this way I get to be a bit pickier about what I read, and when, and have more chances of enjoying my reading!

What about you? Do you review books for publishers? Do you want to?

  1. Very wise!
That's my stance about books, and it has always been since I started 5 and a half years ago - like you, I'm picky. I do have a few books that I review for indie authors/small publishers, but those are the ones I actually request because I'm fairly sure I'll like them (or I accept because they sound up my alley). Popular titles don't mean anything for me per se - I may read one once in a while because it sounds like something I might enjoy, but that's all. We can be a little out of the loop, but at least we always promote books we're passionate about!

    1. Absolutely! I'm glad there are others out there with a similar stance. You can definitely feel like you're doing this wrong when it seems like everyone is reviewing the same 15 books. Good for you for only picking ones that sound promising to you - it makes the whole thing more enjoyable when most of what you review is stuff you like.

  2. You are smart not to get in the Netgalley trap. I have over a hundred books still waiting to be reviewed on my NG going back over the last 8 years. They pile up fast. I am still slowly going through them. Being able to blog without obligations and deadlines is so much easier. I wouldn’t worry about posting books that are current, I gave up on that a long time ago. Just post what makes you happy! Thanks for being a part of TMST this week!

    1. That sounds terrifying! I think I would go insane if I has a list like that, so I have a lot of respect that you are trying to work through it. I think ARCs are great and that people should definitely get them if they are interested, but I think that it's best to do whatever is right for you as well - that's what makes all of our blogs unique and worth reading!

  3. This is so, so smart of you and when you do start getting review requests (which you eventually will) I suggest you be very hard on yourself and not get swept away by the excitement of it all. I did that mistake- accepting whatever books were thrown my way and lets just say I kinda regret it now, lol.
