Pillow Talk

Made in 1959, this movie stars Rock Hudson and Doris Day, and is one of their three films together.

What It's About:

When womanizing songwriter Brad and serious interior decorator Jan share a phone line, each has trouble coordinating using the line to make their calls - business for her, personal for him. Fed up with Brad hogging the phone for his numerous (and nearly identical) conversations with different women, Jan complains to the phone company in hopes to get her private line sooner. Yet, this is the catalyst for Brad's revenge. Armed with a fake accent and phony name, he uses the full extent of his charm on Jan - but what he didn't count on was a shift from animosity to affection.

Why You'll Love It:

  • Devilishly funny, this movie will keep you grinning throughout the whole thing.
  • Rock Hudson is a charmer. With a twinkle in his eye and a great sense of humour, he's the perfect leading man that is impossible to hate (even if it's against your better judgement!)
  • Doris Day is wonderful, playing both cute and indignant delightfully.
  • If you love Cary Grant movies and that type of humour, this one will be right up your alley!
  • If you're looking for a sweet, feel-good movie for the afternoon that you can just sit back, relax, and enjoy, then I think you will love this one.

Why You Might Want To Skip It:
  • A few moments definitely have to be watched with the time period in mind, as by today's standards they are quite offensive and distasteful. Fortunately though, there are only a couple of these sorts of moments in the movie.
  • If you want an original concept, this won't deliver for you. It follows the same formula of so many films of this time period, and nothing will come as a surprise.
  • If you're bothered by a relationship started on false pretenses (even if things get explained in time), then run the other way.
  • The two leads don't have sizzling chemistry - they are simply cute and sweet. A red-hot romance won't be found here.

Have you watched this film, or any of the others with Hudson and Day? Which ones do you love?
