Musical Identity Book Tag

I decided to make a new tag! I created this one a long time ago, but just hadn't written in my own answers. If you love musicals as much as I do, then I hope you'll answer these questions as well. And if not, perhaps you'll have fun reading my answers anyway!

Memories

What was the first musical you saw (whether on stage, or on film)?

The King and I! It was the first one I saw, actually both on stage and on film, so it has a very special place in my heart.

What musical were you most surprised impacted you as strongly as it did?

Rent! I thought for the longest time that it was probably this super hyped-up musical that it was popular to like because it was edgy. And yes, I think that that is absolutely the case for some people - but I also think it's brilliant. (Now, will I ever understand the appeal of the song "Over the Moon?" No, no I won't).

What is the most original musical you've ever seen?

I think that depends, a bit. I'm tempted to say Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, simply because of the variety of musical styles running through it. Otherwise, Godspell has a really unique structure to it.

It might be silly, odd, or cheesy, but what musical do you have a soft spot for anyway?

Gigi. It's a musical that a lot of people probably don't know about, and it has definitely some elements that might not look the best to modern audiences, but I fell in love with it as a little girl (thank heavens! ;) ) and still love it very much go this day.

Feelings

What's your favourite classic musical?

Probably The Phantom of the Opera!

What's your favourite contemporary musical?

Maybe Dear Evan Hansen? I tend to be a bit of an oldie where musicals are concerned, but I really enjoy the music from this one. Otherwise, if it counts, Rent. But I'm not sure that's considered "current" enough.

Musical movies - not necessarily a musical, but what's one you love?

Lili (1953) is one of my favourite movies of all time. It has a few musical numbers, but I wouldn't exactly refer to it as a musical. (With both Gigi and Lili on this list...can you tell I love Leslie Caron?)

What's a musical you just don't understand the appeal of?

There are actually several I just don't get the appeal of, but the first one that comes to mind is Shrek: the Musical. I don't personally like the Shrek movies in the first place, and I don't understand how this would make an appealing musical either...but that's just me!

The Specifics

Who are you most like from Rent, and why?

Mark. Absolutely Mark. I adore him completely, and connected with him right away. I do have elements of Roger and Mimi as well, but just listen to the song Hallowe'en, and you will see how I feel.

If you could play any part in Hamilton, which would you choose?

Angelica Schuler for sure. Although I would get so tongue tied trying to get the lyrics out that quickly!

Should Christine have ended up with The Phantom in the original musical?

Yes. I know, I know...that might be terrible of me, but in some ways I still wish they ended up together. And I have seen Love Never Dies, but that doesn't fit in the same way for me.

Do you consider classic Disney movies to be musicals?

I personally don't, but I have no issues with people referring to them as such. I mean, they contain a lot of music, and this is used to tell the story and express feelings exactly in the same way that musicals are, but to me they feel different because they are animated. By definition, I guess they are "Disney animated musicals" but I think of them as a category unto themselves.

Would You Rather Book Tag

I've been having a hard time blogging for many months, so I want to focus on some fun and light content hopefully for the next little while until I get back into the swing of things...and what's more fun than a tag? These questions are provided by Greg @ Book Haven!

1) Would you rather read or watch Netflix for an entire year?

In truth, read, although I unfortunately haven't had much mental space for it lately. But reading will always be one of my favourite things to do, regardless of if I am actively able to do it!

2) Would you rather read all new releases or used/ backlist books for a year

Backlist books! I have such an extensive backlist of things that I truly want to read (and in a lot of cases, also own). I would love to clear these shelves down a bit!

3) Would you rather have pizza or Chinese food?

Well, Greg has decided to torture me with this question. I eat a fair amount of pizza, so I guess I would likely have to pick that...but I truly, truly love Chinese food, especially Szechuan.

Fireworks Book Tag!

As Clare from The Regal Critiques reminded me, it's Bonfire Night (or as many of us in Canada know it as, Guy Fawkes Day). So, I'm grabbing this tag from her, which she originally found here.

Screamers: A book that made you want to scream (in a good or bad way)

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. I legitimately screamed when I read the ending, and proceeded to start back at the beginning instantly. This is one of those book where the beginning occurs after the end, and the whole thing is a memory. Anyway, if you haven't read this one, the ending is divine.

Bombers: A book that you read before it "exploded" in the book community
Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I read this maybe two years after it came out? Regardless, it wasn't one I had really heard that much about at the time. But now there's a show, and everyone and their dog knows about it.

Banger: A banned book you've read
So many. I feel like a lot of my favourite books can be determined by looking at a banned book list. Let me see...The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. I love the "banned" content of this book so much that when I realized that they had released the original, uncensored version, I instantly sought after a copy.

Book Blogger Memory Challenge Tag

The
Book Blogger
Memory Challenge
Tag

This tag was created by Laura @ Laura’s Book Reviews (which doesn't seem to be around anymore?), however I found it through The Book Nut.

Here are the rules:

You must answer these questions without looking anything up on the internet and without looking at your bookshelves!!
Once you’ve completed this tag, tag 5 other book bloggers to answer the questions next.

1. Name a book written by an author called Michael. - Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

Alright, I sort of cheated on this one. I had the previous poster's answer for this so stuck in my head that I couldn't think of another Michael whom I knew a book they had written. So, I asked someone else to tell me an author's name, and hoped I would know a book by them. When they said Crichton, Jurassic Park immediately came to mind. So...a half cheat?

2. Name a book with a dragon on the cover. - Talon by Joy(?) Kagawa
(edit: Julie Kagawa) I mean, it's dragon scales, so that counts...right?

3. Name a book about a character called George. - George and Martha by James Marshall

4. Name a book written by an author with the surname Smith. -Tantalize by Cynthia Leitich Smith
Although I've never read this book, I always thought it had a beautiful cover.

Breakfast Book Tag

I decided a while back that I wanted to work on a few book tags because they look so fun. So, mining through the great expanse of the internet looking for ones to complete, I came up with one of my own! As this one is of my own creation, please feel free to use it (images and all, if desired), but please link back to either this post, or my blog, Clockwork Bibliotheca, in general. Be on the lookout for more tags over the next while from me. Here we go!
------------------------------------

1) Sunny Side Up - A book that just makes you happy every time you read it.

Rose in Bloom by Louisa May Alcott always makes me smile. It's just a lovely feel-good story with the sweetest ending. Read Eight Cousins first though to get the full experience of the characters and their growth.

2) Crispy Bacon - A couple that has a sizzling romance.

I've got to go with Claire and Jamie from Outlander. If these two don't get you...well, I think we're going to have drastically different tastes in romance. Their romance is sweet, hot, and passionate as hell.

3) Maple Syrup Pancakes - One sweet moment from a great book.

In Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë, there is a lovely little moment when Mr. Weston helps Agnes to pick some primroses that she has difficulty reaching. It's a sweet display of gentlemanly behaviour.

I Want Candy

I found a fun little tag a while back on the blog Sorry, I'm Booked called The Candy Book Tag, and I thought it looked really fun. So, I'm going to give it a go because a) Candy, and b) Books. It really can't get much better than that, unless you include tea. And what a way to start the year off! Alright, first item on the list:

Apples – Ah. Healthy food. It is deep, meaningful, and probably won a lot of awards but, um, it really isn’t your thing.

Well, I'd have to say The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. I think Plath has some great poetry, but this book really just didn't do it for me. I don't know if I read it at the wrong time in my life or what, but I barely got through it.

Milk Chocolate – This is a book you’d recommend to absolutely EVERYONE.

Everyone? That's a tough one for me. Working in a library I really get to see how everyone's tastes really differ. However, since I find this to be an absolutely impossible thing to answer, I'll just pick something that I think has a lot to offer for many different people, and that's Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontё. Gothic mystery, strong characters, romance, independence, and hardship - what's not to love?

Top Ten Books I Want My Future Children to Read

This week's Top Ten Tuesday, inspired by The Broke and the Bookish, was both a piece of cake, and a tricky one for me. First of all, I work in a library...a children's library, so thinking of fantastic children's books is literally what I do for a living. That means I had about 850 in the span of a second. Narrowing it down, however? Very, very hard. So I decided to pick ones that I thought would be great reads for both boys and girls across a variety of ages. I've left out items that have many components, such as series, as well as things like fairy and folk tales. If you want to check out the original post, you can see it here.

1) Le Petit Prince/The Little Prince - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

2) Ferdinand - Munro Leaf
